Chapter 13 – Planning Meeting

“Ren, that was amazing!”

“You’ve done awesome, buddy, congrats!”

“Yeah, you’ve made it so far!”

“Everyone in the market is talking about you guys. You’re basically celebrities.”

“I sold a potion because I told them I knew one of the lair slayers! My first sale ever!”

“I taught him everything he knows. We used to fight all the time when he was in Huag!”

“You and Jen are doing so well. One of you might actually win!”

“That Tao guy is really fast, though. It won’t be easy!”

“We’ve got to take a couple of minutes to talk about your next opponent’s Skills—”

“Oh, can it, Zane. You can do that in the morning. Let them celebrate and relax tonight!”

“You kids are impressive out there. You’ll all make some fine Dungeoneers.”

“Still a bit green, but I agree with old man Griff here.”

“None of that matters. We’ve got to celebrate! Ren beat Louis! People will be talking about that fight all day this week!”

Everyone chatted as we left the campus grounds on our way to find food. It hadn’t taken long to get Jen, who quickly convinced her parents, before joining us for the night.

The whole gang was here. Zane, Britta, Cassie, Trish, Trevor, Noah, Ron, Todd, and my family along to celebrate mine and Jen’s place in the tournament.

Even Adam and Tom’s team of Dungeoneers joined us.

I needed to get some rest, but they were all eager to make us feel special.

I wanted to be excited with them, but the praise felt odd, and I still didn’t know how I was supposed to feel after my win.

“You guys go on. We won’t be far behind,” mom said, shepherding everyone ahead. The change was sudden, but I obliged as dad convinced Elise to keep walking.

Mom sidled up beside me as we slowed down to make room between us and the group.

“So, spill, what’s going on in your overactive head.”

“It’s nothing, Mom. I just have a lot to think about.”

“Yes, that’s true. It’s not every day you make it to the final day of the Prep Tournament. You should be excited but, instead, you’re barely even looking at your friends as they’re singing your praises.”

“Yeah, because I’m not sure I deserve those praises.”

“Terrence Stine, you worked as hard, if not harder, than everyone else on that stage. You deserve it just as much as anyone. What is this really about?”

“That last fight. I asked him to concede. I asked them to stop the fight.”

“Oh, okay,” she said, changing her tone. “Honey, I tried to protect you from violence growing up, so I guess this is partly my fault, but I think you need to remember the world we live in. Your father would come home every other week and let me know about another friend of ours who didn’t make it. And he wasn’t even Dungeoneering, just out there drinking with people at the Guild.

“Tom would go off on these excursions, and the travel would make me envious, but I knew it always came at a cost.

“What you did tonight was a bit hard to watch, but that changes nothing about how we think about you.
